Your Family Can't Recover What They Can't Find

Planning for digital assets — from crypto to online accounts

Most estate plans cover the house, the bank accounts and the retirement funds. Far fewer cover what lives only online: crypto, online-only bank and brokerage accounts, domain names, cloud photo libraries, rewards points. With no paper statements arriving in the mail, these are the assets most likely to be lost.

Crypto is the extreme case. There's no institution to call and no "forgot password" link. If no one knows what you hold or how to reach it, it's gone.

Two Risks, Two Different Answers

Protecting digital assets means solving two separate problems:

  • Theft: someone gets what they shouldn't. The answer is to keep the most sensitive secrets offline and under your control.
  • Loss: the people you trust can't find what they need. The answer is a clear, shared plan.

Most advice focuses on theft. Loss is the risk most families actually face.

For Crypto: Separate the Keys from the Map

  • The keys are seed phrases, private keys and hardware wallet PINs. Keep them offline, in more than one secure physical location. Don't store them in any online service, including Prisidio.
  • The map is what you own, where it's held, where the backups are kept, and the steps to recover it. That's what your family needs, and it's what belongs in your vault.
Tip: describe locations in a way that makes sense to your family but not to a stranger. “The safe deposit box Sarah has the second key to” is better than a street address.

What to Record

  • Every wallet, exchange and online financial account you use (not the logins)
  • Where hardware wallets and backups are physically kept
  • Plain-language recovery steps
  • Your attorney, CPA or financial advisor, and what each one knows
  • Who should act, and when

How Prisidio Helps

Decide who sees what.

Invite family members and advisors, and give each one access to specific documents or categories, not your whole vault. Change or revoke access at any time.

Plan for the day you can't be there.

Designate a Key Holder in advance: someone who can request access if you're incapacitated or pass away. On eligible plans, Key Holders verify their identity through CLEAR before the role is activated.

Know who's looking.

Get notified when someone signs in to your vault, and review a full history of who accessed what. Revoke access with one click.

Share without email attachments.

Send a single document with a secure link that expires and requires a verification code.

Strong sign-in for everyone.

Multi-factor authentication is required for every user on every sign-in, not just the owner.

The Bottom Line

A hardware wallet protects your crypto from theft. Only a plan protects it from being lost. Keep the keys offline, put the map in one secure place, and decide now who should be able to use it.
